Season 2009/10 saw our highest league finish in 5 years, equalling the 7th place finish recorded in Season 04/05.
We started off our league campaign inconsistently, winning only 3 of our first 10 games – however due to the harsh winter and some great cup runs (see below) we only managed to play these 10 games by February! This left us with a backlog of matches to play which at one point could’ve seen us promoted, but with 16 games to play in 8 weeks, injuries, suspensions and work commitments left us, in the end, 11 points short of the required 3rd place.
We did however have some great cup runs, especially considering in the past two seasons we’ve only won 2 cup ties! The first highlight of this run seen us grab an away Scottish Cup tie for the first time in 7 years, meeting the exotic-sounding Stirling side California AFC. After a tough match, we were unlucky to go down 2-1. This didn’t dampen our spirits though, as everyone enjoyed a jolly bus journey home, especially a certain Sam Gove. This result proved how well we played as in the following round, California AFC managed to knock out eventual Premier Champions Bon-Accord City out of the competition.
The other highlight of the cups was our form in the League Cup. After disposing of league-leaders Ellon and a strong Halliburton side, we had a daunting trip to play Mintlaw in the semi-final. After a tough match, we managed to squeeze past 6-2 after extra time. This ensured us a League Cup Final place for the second time in 3 seasons, where we would come up against Mearns Utd. A disappointing night followed, in which we never really turned up for the final, losing 5-0. This proved to be the only match of the season where we failed to score a goal.
On a tragic note, the club was devastated with the loss of two of its youngest members at the beginning of May. Billy Robertson and Euan Cowie sadly passed away within a couple of days of each other. Both lads were just beginning to make a name for themselves at the club when tragedy struck. Our thoughts and prayers went out to both families at such a difficult time for all, and these two will always be remembered at the club.
Clubwise, Rick Cameron was awarded with a 4-trophy haul at the end of season awards. The Top Scorer, with an incredible 36 goals, the Player’s Player award for the 4th season in a row and also the Manager’s Player of the Year. Rick was also awarded with a special trophy thanks to his 10-year service with the club. On his debut season at Bankhead, the afore-mentioned Sam Gove picked up the Spoon of the Season after ‘failing to hold his ale’ on the bus home from the Scottish Cup tie in Falkirk.
